A 6 km promenade atop the Miraflores cliffs, El Malecón lines parks, sculptures, a lighthouse and paragliding site overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

El Malecón de Miraflores, nicknamed "the Miraflores promenade," stretches nearly 6 km along the top of the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, in the Miraflores district of Lima. This coastal promenade brings together gardens, lookout points, sculptures and sports facilities, and stands as one of the most frequented public spaces in the Peruvian capital.

Why visit El Malecón

El Malecón offers a concentrated glimpse of Miraflores: refined urban planning, direct ocean vistas, easy access to outdoor activities and a succession of themed parks. The promenade combines multiple points of interest along a single axis — public sculpture, paragliding, historic port architecture, engineering marvels — making it a worthwhile stop during a Lima stay, easily accessible on foot and suited to all paces.

It's also a prime vantage point over the Pacific: on clear days, you can spot surfers on the Costa Verde beaches below and the silhouette of San Lorenzo island offshore.

What to see along El Malecón

El Malecón is divided into three segments that succeed one another from north to south:

  • Malecón de la Marina (north)
  • Malecón Cisneros (centre)
  • Malecón de la Reserva (south)

Parque del Amor and the "El Beso" sculpture

Located on the Malecón de la Marina, Parque del Amor is dedicated to the theme of romance. It houses the sculpture "El Beso" by Peruvian artist Victor Delfín, depicting an embracing couple, as well as mosaic benches inspired by Barcelona's Park Güell, adorned with poetic quotations.

Antonio Raimondi park and paragliding

The expansive Antonio Raimondi park is one of Lima's principal paragliding sites. The cliff configuration and sea breezes enable regular flights, notably tandem flights with a certified instructor for beginners. Expect approximately 10 to 15 minutes of flight time depending on conditions.

The Malecón Cisneros lighthouse

The lighthouse at Malecón Cisneros, built in the early 20th century, stands about 21 metres tall and bears distinctive blue and white stripes. Once a navigation landmark for sailors, it now serves as a beacon for strollers and offers, from the adjacent viewpoint, one of the finest vantage points for photographing the coastline.

The Villena Rey bridge

Inaugurated in 1968, the Villena Rey bridge connects Malecón Cisneros to Malecón de la Reserva via an arch spanning approximately 104 metres. It spans a road descending from upper Miraflores toward the coastal route flanking the beaches.

Other parks along the route

The promenade passes through a succession of landscaped parks, among them Domodossola, Salazar, Letonia, San Marcelino Champagnat, Necochea, Intihuatana, Raimondi, de Los Niños, Yitzhak Rabin, Grau and Maria Reiche. Each offers its own benches, sculptures, green spaces or playgrounds.

When to visit

Lima's coast experiences a distinctive climate marked by garúa, a dense coastal mist that blankets the city from May to November. During this period, temperatures remain mild (15-19°C) but skies are often grey and humidity high.

The most favourable season extends from December to April: clear skies, temperatures between 22 and 28°C, ideal conditions for paragliding and ocean views. Late afternoon, around sunset, is the most prized time to explore El Malecón.
