The Ascent of Arequipa's Volcanoes

The city of Arequipa is surrounded by emblematic volcanoes that constitute prime objectives for andinists:

Chachani

Chachani is a volcano whose summit reaches 6,075 meters. According to most andinists, it is easy to climb due to the absence of glaciers and complex climbing techniques. However, it is necessary to have endurance. Furthermore, at certain times of the year, snow can be seen at the summit of this volcano.

Its ascent begins at approximately 5,000 meters. It is thus possible to reach its summit in two days. The most experienced andinists can complete the ascent in just 9 hours.

Moreover, visitors depart early in the morning on the first day and spend a night at a base camp located halfway before reaching their destination. Upon reaching the volcano's summit, breathtaking landscapes of the Andes mountain range and surrounding valleys await the andinists. Additionally, it is also possible to view the various volcanoes in the Arequipa region such as Misti, Pichu Pichu, and Nevado Ampato.

Misti

Reaching an altitude of 5,825 meters, Misti is one of the active volcanoes that dominates the city of Arequipa, located 17 kilometers away. It attracts many andinists for the challenges it offers. Also called El Misti, this stratovolcano is distinguished by its perfect conical shape. Its ascent generally begins at 3,300 or 3,400 meters in altitude to reach a base camp. The excursion lasts two days.

2 different routes are available for ascending the Misti volcano:

  • The first consists of reaching Chigara, which is located about thirty kilometers from Arequipa
  • The second crosses the Salinas and Aguada Blanca national reserves

Upon reaching the summit of Misti, andinists can see a large iron cross erected in 1901. The landscapes and views are extraordinary and allow you to admire the massifs of the volcanic cordillera of Southern Perú. It takes only 3 to 4 hours to descend the volcano.

Pichu Pichu

Also called Picchu Picchu, Pichu Pichu is a volcano located approximately 32 km east of the city of Arequipa. It is less frequently visited compared to other andinism destinations, but its ascent offers a more intimate and serene experience for andinists. Pichu Pichu stands out for its visually impressive silhouette comprising 7 main summits.

For well-acclimatized andinists, the ascent of this volcano can be completed in one day. Nevertheless, a two-day outing is ideal to be able to admire and enjoy the various views and landscapes at the summit of the volcano and its surroundings.
