Tingo Maria is a small city in Leoncio Prado Province, located in the Huánuco region of Pérou, nestled in the heart of the Amazon jungle. It sits at the confluence of the Monzón and Huallaga rivers. Known for its natural beauty, this city is sometimes referred to as the "Gateway to the Amazon." Surrounded by lush mountains, winding rivers and dense tropical forests, this destination offers an authentic experience for those seeking to explore Peru's natural wonders.

History and Context

Tingo Maria was founded in 1938, though the region has been inhabited for centuries by various indigenous communities. The city rose to prominence thanks to its position between the Andes and the Amazon rainforest, making it a passage point for explorers, merchants, and later, tourists.

Its development was influenced by the rubber trade in the early 20th century. However, it was its tourism potential that truly put Tingo Maria on the map. Today, this city is considered one of the main gateways for exploring the Peruvian Amazon.

Climate

Tingo Maria sits at approximately 650 meters altitude, giving it a typically hot and humid tropical climate. Average temperatures range between 20 to 30°C throughout the year. The rainy season extends from November to April, which makes certain areas difficult to access, but is also when nature is at its most lush.

Tingo Maria National Park

Tingo Maria National Park is arguably the region's most famous attraction. Located 6 km southwest of the city, it was created in 1965 as one of Peru's first national parks. It covers an area of more than 18,000 hectares. The park is a true paradise for nature lovers, offering exceptional biodiversity with endemic fauna and flora species.

Among the park's most remarkable sites is the Cueva de las Lechuzas (Cave of the Owls). This immense cave is home to a colony of Oilbirds, which resemble owls somewhat. You'll also find thousands of bats and Guácharos (oil birds) hidden in the cave's darkness and behind stalagmite and stalactite formations. The Cueva de las Lechuzas is accessible via a trail through the forest, offering visitors complete immersion in the jungle.

The park also features several waterfalls, the most famous being the Catarata San Carmen. Standing 30 meters high and surrounded by dense vegetation, it's the ideal place to cool off after a jungle hike.

As an expanding tourist destination, Tingo Maria is committed to promoting sustainable and responsible tourism. Local authorities, in collaboration with NGOs and indigenous communities, have implemented several initiatives aimed at preserving the environment while providing economic opportunities for residents.

Conservation initiatives within Tingo Maria National Park are a striking example. Reforestation programs, protection of endangered species, and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices are efforts designed to protect the region's fragile ecosystem.
