History
Legend tells of Huacachina's origins: a beautiful indigenous princess sought refuge here to escape a hunter. When she touched the lake's waters, vegetation began to flourish. Some say the sand dunes are the marks left by the folds of her cloak. To this day, stories persist that the princess transformed into a mermaid and continues to swim in Lake Huacachina's waters.
The Oasis of Huacachina
Located just 5 km from the city of Ica on Pérou's southern coast, Huacachina oasis is a favored retreat for Ica families. What to Do in Huacachina
Buggy Rides
Available from 6 am until sunset, you can choose between a private buggy or one shared with 8 to 10 people. These exhilarating moments let you traverse the region's sand dunes while soaking in the captivating exotic landscapes. Expect to pay around 40 soles for a 2-hour ride.
Sandboarding
For an adrenaline rush, sandboarding is unbeatable. You can easily rent a board in town for 5 soles per hour or experience it during a buggy excursion. The driver will take you to the top of the dunes so you can glide down on your board.
Ica's Pisco
Pisco is Pérou's national spirit. The Ica region is its primary producer. This brandy is crafted from grape distillate, egg white, crushed ice, cane syrup, and lime juice. A unique preparation that deserves your attention.
What to See in Huacachina
The City of Ica
Beyond Huacachina's magnificent landscapes, visit the city of Ica, located 5 km away. It is home to roughly 85 artisanal distilleries producing the famous Pisco. Don't hesitate to tour a few and discover traditional production methods. The Adolfo Bermúdez Jenkins Regional Museum offers a collection of artifacts from Ica, Inca, Paracas, Nasca, and Huari cultures. You'll find textiles, ceramics, and numerous mummies. Also explore the beauty of Ica's cathedral, with its distinctive blend of baroque and neoclassical architecture.
Paracas National Reserve
Paracas lies approximately 70 km (about one hour and fifteen minutes) from Huacachina Oasis. This small port town showcases a magnificent meeting of desert and sea. To protect the area's natural treasures, a nature reserve was established in 1975. Thanks to the countless birds nesting here, its cliffs will surely fascinate you. You'll encounter guano birds and large colonies of sea lions, along with Humboldt penguins, guano birds, and the Andean flamingo. Spanning 335,000 hectares (117,400 ha on land and 217,600 ha at sea), this site holds numerous natural and archaeological wonders, a small museum, and two charming fishing villages.
The Ballestas Islands
Nestled near Paracas, these islands form a genuine bird sanctuary. You'll encounter diverse colonies of seabirds and a multitude of sea lions. Meet Humboldt penguins, Peruvian pelicans, and Bougainville cormorants. An excursion to the Ballestas Islands is perfect as a 2-hour boat tour. You can also reach them by speedboat in just half an hour. A true tourist destination, these islands are also called the "Galapagos of Pérou."
Climate
Characterized by a desert climate, Huacachina Oasis receives virtually no rainfall. Its weather is ideal for sunny vacations on Peruvian soil. The average annual temperature hovers around 19.6°C. You can visit Huacachina any time of year.
You'll arrive at Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima. From there, take the Cruz Del Sur bus company. The journey takes approximately 5 hours.
Since the village is surrounded by sand dunes, buggies are the primary mode of transport for tourists.
