History
In 1920, Barranco was founded by Spanish colonists who nicknamed it the "town of windmills." In the years that followed, Barranco developed into a chic seaside resort favored by Lima's high society. Since then, the city became the summer residence of affluent Limeños.
In the mid-20th century, many renowned Peruvian writers and artists settled in the neighborhood, giving the small city its artistic and romantic character. In 1940, Barranco was struck by a violent earthquake that left the city in ruins. A few years later, it was rebuilt.
Exploring Barranco District
It is nearly impossible to visit Lima without passing through this bohemian neighborhood. Barranco district is home to countless interesting vestiges and monuments, including luminous buildings, splendid parks, grand avenues, street "fine arts," bars, historic churches, and museums reflecting the city's glorious past.
During the day, the city has a calm and serene atmosphere. This is the ideal time for a stroll across the bridge known as "Puente de los Suspiros" or the Bridge of Sighs. Built entirely of wood, it spans the two sides of a ravine. According to legend, this bridge is connected to the daughter of a wealthy man who lived in one of the houses overlooking the ravine. She fell hopelessly in love with a street sweeper and planned to marry him. However, due to their vast social difference, her father firmly refused their union. Distraught, she decided to remain alone for the rest of her life and vowed never to love again. Moreover, it is said that when you cross the bridge, you can hear her sighs.
Continue your walk across the other side of the ravine. There, you will find a lovely park with a statue dedicated to the famous Peruvian poet, composer, and folk singer known as Chabuca Granda. In the surrounding area, you will discover several captivating attractions, such as La Ermita (the Hermitage), Bajada de Baños, the museum, and many more.
At sunset, the energy picks up with nightclubs, bars, and live entertainment restaurants. Moreover, the streets overflow with a variety of crafts (jewelry and other beautiful ceramic pieces).
Climate
Barranco enjoys a tropical climate marked by significant rainfall. Average temperatures hover around 25.3°C.
For a bus journey, you can get off at Bulevar. This will take you directly to Barranco's main square, in the heart of the neighborhood. However, you must be very attentive when taking the bus, as they pass quickly while calling out destinations without giving you an extra moment to think. For a more comfortable visit, rent a taxi to reach the city.
