History and Culture
According to certain hypotheses, the first communities of Colca settled in Sibayo more than 8,000 years ago. This village is also known as "Rumi Llaca" or "Rumillaca" in Quechua, which means "stone village." It was founded during the colonial period, though its roots extend further back to pre-Hispanic times. Sibayo is celebrated for its stone and earthen constructions dating from the 16th century, which give it a rustic charm and an otherworldly atmosphere.
The inhabitants of Sibayo, mostly of Quechua origin, have managed to preserve their culture and traditions through the centuries. The Quechua language is still widely spoken, and ancestral agricultural practices continue to shape daily life.
Traditional festivities and rituals, such as celebrations honoring patron saints, offer opportunities to discover folk dances, songs, and colorful costumes reflecting the cultural heritage of this region. These are also occasions to taste "chicha de jora," a fermented corn drink that is an integral part of local rituals and festivities.
Moreover, the inhabitants are also renowned for their craftsmanship, particularly hand-made textiles such as rugs and embroidery. The techniques used have been passed down from generation to generation.
Climate
Sibayo's climate is harsh due to its high altitude, with cool days and cold nights year-round. Temperatures range between 2°C and 20°C. The region experiences a rainy season from December to March, making certain roads difficult to access.
