Iquitos is perhaps the most magical and mysterious place in Pérou. This sprawling city nestled deep within the Amazon rainforest is a true gateway to an exotic world—a realm of incredible wildlife, lush flora, and remarkably welcoming indigenous peoples. If the adventurer in you has always dreamed of following in the footsteps of history's greatest explorers through the jungle, there's nothing quite like a journey to Iquitos!

An Exceptional City

Along the Amazon River and at the heart of the forest, Iquitos is a vibrant metropolis set within a truly exceptional natural landscape. In fact, it is the world's largest city accessible only by water!

Indeed, no roads lead to this verdant oasis in Pérou. What was once a small, isolated village has become, through colonization and the rubber boom, a city of over 500,000 inhabitants, yet remains remarkably remote.

Picture this paradise scene worthy of adventure novels: bazaars on stilts lining the Amazon River, wooden lodges nestled deep in the forest... Welcome to Iquitos!

Once thriving on rubber production and export, Iquitos now relies on timber, nuts, and above all tourism. It has indeed become an essential destination on any journey to Pérou, especially for adventurers eager to set foot in the Amazon.

The city itself is charming, if somewhat chaotic. Transport by motorcycle or tuk-tuk winds through an intensely humid environment at the heart of the planet's most magnificent forest. Around every corner, you'll find traces of colonization and remnants of this city's gilded past, bursting with vitality. You can visit the Museum of Amazonian Indigenous Cultures as well as the Biblioteca Amazonica, which houses nearly 27,000 books and 3,000 photographs, to learn more about Amazon traditions and cultures.

Head to the Amazon River to witness one of the most spectacular sunsets of your life... In Iquitos, a charming promenade has been built along this legendary river (the Malecón). Here, in addition to enjoying an exceptional stroll along the Amazon and observing the incredible animals inhabiting it, you can sample local delicacies at numerous vendors or watch dance or live music performances.

Another key landmark in Iquitos, Belén Market is surely one of the world's most beautiful and surprising markets. Small stilt houses are built above the river, offering visitors grilled fish (piranhas, turtles...), medicinal plants, and countless curiosities.

Meeting Amazonian Peoples

While Iquitos initially draws visitors for its natural setting and the opportunity to explore the Amazon and encounter its wildlife, don't overlook that it's an exceptional place to connect with local communities.

Along the river, traditional small villages are dotted throughout. Here, people cultivate bananas and timber, and fish from narrow dugout canoes. Always delighted to welcome visitors, they'll be thrilled to share their culture and way of life.

Iquitos is not a world cut off from civilization, even if the villages operate without electricity, among other modern conveniences. You'll encounter plenty of activity, such as women doing laundry in the turbulent waters of the Amazon.

A journey to Iquitos is also an opportunity to meet the Yagua tribe, for example, and discover their traditional dances and hunting methods...

Into the Heart of the Amazon Rainforest

Of course, a stay in Iquitos is synonymous with adventure. Don't miss this unique opportunity to venture into the Amazon! Whether for a quick day trip near the city or a trek deep into the legendary forest, Iquitos is a true gateway to the Amazon.

Fulfill childhood dreams by searching for monkeys, sloths, snakes, and stunningly colorful birds... You might even be fortunate enough to spot pink river dolphins in the Amazon.

Several nature reserves and wildlife parks are located near Iquitos to facilitate these encounters: Isla de los Monos, Amazon Rescue Center, Samira Pagaya National Reserve or Allpahuayo Mishana Reserve, Lake Yarina... In any case, be sure to hire a professional guide before venturing into the forest, as the Amazon does come with its dangers.

Reaching Iquitos by Boat

These natural treasures are reserved for the most adventurous, as Iquitos is not easily accessible. The simplest and fastest way to get there is obviously by plane: expect roughly two hours of flight from Pérou's capital, Lima.

But to truly complete your journey, nothing compares to traveling to Iquitos by boat. Vessels depart from Yurimaguas or Pucallpa and take approximately 4 days of navigation to reach Iquitos. A journey that's admittedly not the most comfortable, but it's truly the adventure of a lifetime. You'll sleep in your hammock, surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, connecting with local communities...

From Iquitos, it's also possible to book a luxury cruise on the Amazon, a perfect way to experience the landscapes from a different perspective.

The climate in Iquitos is always very humid, so come prepared. Avoid March and April, which are exceptionally rainy and make visiting difficult and unpleasant. On-site, you can stay in lodges along the Amazon River, as close to nature as possible.
